About
Tonia Whittaker has always been creative, even as a young child. Her parents built her an art room in the basement where she could experiment with every art medium she could think of including jewelry, pottery, painting, spinning wool and weaving.
She started exploring photography in high school and earned a full scholarship for photography in college. She continued with her photography after she was married and began winning awards in local, state and national shows and competitions. She had her work shown in Soho, NYC, Boston, and several pieces were shown in a traveling art show for a year.
After over 40 years working mostly in photography, she was itching for a more hands-on experience and decided to get back into painting. She enrolled in the Mastery Program at the Milan Art Institute. Since then she has been experimenting, playing, and exploring the relationship between nature and abstraction. She is currently working on a series that is challenging her to re imagine themes and subjects that many have painted before her, delving into her creative process deeper making new discoveries with color, inks, and texture. When Tonia can balance play, discovery and a successful series, her new innovations feed her soul.
Tonia loves to give back and help her grandchildren, and new artists turn their curiosity into creativity and turn play into making art. Tonia will continue to show her work locally as well as nationally.
